Ian Robertson

Former Conwy Camera Club member Ian Robertson passed away on 26 July after a long battle with cancer. He will be missed by his many friends in the club.

Ian, originally from St. Asaph, who lived in Glan Conwy, joined the club in 1999 while he was still working for the Inland Revenue. He was one of the relatively large intake of members that year which began to turn around the club’s fortunes. Others included Elizabeth and Brian Cook, who also died recently.

Although fishing was his life long passion, it is no exaggeration to say that joining the club transformed Ian’s life as well as his photographic skills. He formed a particularly strong bond with Derek Crawford, Tony Waring and the late Ray Humphreys, all of whom shared his passion for hill walking and landscape photography. They would walk each weekend, come rain or shine, and built up collections of stunning photos of Snowdonia, the Lake District, Scotland and the Alps.

Later, when illness kept him off the mountains, he formed new friendships with club members who specialised in photographing steam trains. This enabled him to visit many heritage railways with like-minded people who understood the appeal of searching out photogenic places by the lineside and standing in a field until the train came into shot. Ian was particularly fond of the Welsh Highland Railway, from Caernarfon to Porthmadog.
